Venezuelan Supreme Court Restores Power to National Assembly
- That galvanised Venezuela’s demoralised and divided opposition coalition and brought a torrent of worldwide condemnation and concern ranging from the United Nations and European Union to most major Latin American countries. Critics lambasted the move as a “coup” while protesters blocked roads, unfurled banners and chanted slogans against President Nicolas Maduro’s increasingly unpopular government.
Since then, the Supreme Court, largely loyal to Maduro, has curbed congress’s powers and overturned nearly every piece of legislation passed before directly assuming congress’s functions on March 29.
The court´s move tightened socialist President Nicolas Maduro´s grip on power after more than a year in which he was locked in a political struggle with the centre-right opposition. Opposition leaders dismissed the reversal as too little too late.
